readonly_dynrelocs
In early October, HJ Lu added support for a number of targets to "Dump dynamic relocation in read-only section with minfo". This extends that support to more targets, displays the symbol involved, and splits the existing function that sets TEXTREL into a "readonly_dynrelocs" and "maybe_set_textrel" function. I'll need "readonly_dynrelocs" if I ever get around to fixing "pr22374 function pointer initialization" fails. am33_2.0, arc, bfin, hppa64, mn10300, and nios2 fail to mark a binary needing text relocations with DT_TEXTREL. That's not good. xtensa also fails to do so but complains about "dangerous relocation: dynamic relocation in read-only section" so I reckon that is fine and have marked the test as an xfail. The other targets need maintainer attention. Curiously, the map file dump wasn't added for x86, so the map test currently fail on x86. [PR ld/22269] aarch64: Handle local undefined weak symbols
With static pie linking undefined weak symbols are forced to resolve locally to 0, so no GOT setup is needed in elfNN_aarch64_finish_dynamic_symbol, which previously failed for these symbols. The failure caused the unhelpful error message: "ld: final link failed: Nonrepresentable section on output" bfd/ PR ld/22269 * elfnn-aarch64.c (elfNN_aarch64_finish_dynamic_symbol): Use UNDEFWEAK_NO_DYNAMIC_RELOC to avoid dynamic GOT relocs. Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular list
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. (weakdef): New static inline function. * elflink.c (bfd_elf_record_link_assignment) Test is_weakalias rather than u.weakdef != NULL, and use weakdef function. ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.
Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.
ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.
Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested
cross binutils on x86-64 without regressions for aarch64-linux,
alpha-linux, arm-linux, bfin-elf, cr16-elf, cris-elf, crx-elf, frv-linux,
hppa64-linux, hppa-linux, ia64-linux, lm32-elf, m32r-elf, m68k-linux,
mcore-elf, metag-elf, microblaze-linux, mips-linux, mmix, mn10300-elf,
nds32le-linux, nios2-linux, or1k-elf, powerpc64-linux, powerpc-linux,

[AArch64] Remove useless and incorrect assertion
The outer caller elf_link_output_extsym in elflink.c is a traverse function on
all external symbol, and it will only call *finish_dynamic_symbol if some
conditions is meet. It is executed conditionally.
If the condition to trigger that assertion is satisified, it then won't satify
the outer check in finish_dynamic_symbol, so *finish_dynamic_symbol won't be
called that the assertion is expected to be dead code.
If elf_link_output_extsym is a traverse function that unconditionally called
on external symbols decided to be exported, then an assertion to make sure these
symbols are in sane status might make sense.

[AArch64] Remove duplicated code when handling some GOT relocations types
There are quite a few duplicated code supporting several GP based relocation types. They are: BFD_RELOC_AARCH64_LD64_GOTOFF_LO15 BFD_RELOC_AARCH64_MOVW_GOTOFF_G0_NC BFD_RELOC_AARCH64_MOVW_GOTOFF_G1 These relocation types are supposed to be used for large memory model PIC/pic mode under which we will have an initialized GP register points to the base of GOT table, then these relocations are supposed to put the distance between GOT entry and GOT table base address into the related instructions. So, the parameters required to calculate the relocation should be the same as BFD_RELOC_AARCH64_LD64_GOTPAGE_LO15 etc, all of them are require the GOT entry address and GOT table base address to perform the relocation. This patch has removed those duplicated code when handling above listed relocation types, grouped them with others as relocation types that are require GOT table base address during performing relocation, reused the existed GOT handling code. For some pc-relative relocations we want to allow them under PIC mode while a normal global symbol defined in the same dynamic object can still bind externally through copy relocation. So, we should not allow pc-relative relocation against such symbol. As discussed at the PR, this patch tries to avoid COPY relocation generation and propagate the original relocation into runtime if it was relocating on writable section. BFD linker copy relocation elimination framwork requires the backend to always allocate dynrelocs for all those relocation types that are possible to introduce copy relocations. Don't make dynamic .data.rel.ro SEC_READONLY
I'd made this dynamic section read-only so a flag test distinguished it from .dynbss, but like any other .data.rel.ro section it really should be marked read-write. (It is read-only after relocation, not before.) When using the standard linker scripts this usually doesn't matter since the output section is among other read-write sections and not page aligned. However, it might matter in the extraordinary case of the dynamic section being the only .data.rel.ro section with the output section just happening to be page aligned and a multiple of a page in size. dynrelro section for read-only dynamic symbols copied into executable
Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's .bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into the executable to gain a small speed improvement. The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force. ld: aarch64: fix TLS relaxation where TCB_SIZE is used
TCB_SIZE is 2*sizeof(void *), which is 0x10 for lp64, and 0x8 for ilp32. During relaxation, ld goes to do a replace: bl __tls_get_addr => add R0, R0, TCB_SIZE But actual implementation is: bfd_putl32 (0x91004000, contents + rel->r_offset + 4); Which is equivalent of add x0, x0, 0x10. This is wrong for ilp32. The possible fix for it is: bfd_putl32 (0x91000000 | (TCB_SIZE<<10), contents + rel->r_offset + 4); But ilp32 also needs w-registers, so it's simpler to put proper instruction in #if/#else condition. ld: aarch64: fix TLS relaxation where TCB_SIZE is used
TCB_SIZE is 2*sizeof(void *), which is 0x10 for lp64, and 0x8 for ilp32. During relaxation, ld goes to do a replace: bl __tls_get_addr => add R0, R0, TCB_SIZE But actual implementation is: bfd_putl32 (0x91004000, contents + rel->r_offset + 4); Which is equivalent of add x0, x0, 0x10. This is wrong for ilp32. The possible fix for it is: bfd_putl32 (0x91000000 | (TCB_SIZE<<10), contents + rel->r_offset + 4); But ilp32 also needs w-registers, so it's simpler to put proper instruction in #if/#else condition. THere are 2 such relaxations in elfNN_aarch64_tls_relax(), and so 2 new tests added for ilp32 mode to test it. Yury |

We'd like to have the elf_link_hash_table srelplt field rather than some private target field used to save short-cuts to a PLT relocation section. This save a little space but mainly is so that the generic ELF code can access the field. Pass link_info to _bfd_merge_private_bfd_data
Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo

If a backend supports it, PLT entry isn't needed when all references to a STT_GNU_IFUNC symbols are done via GOT or static function pointers. Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. Set dynamic tag VMA and size from dynamic section when possible
Rather than searching the output for a specific named section, it's better, where possible, to use a linker created dynamic section to set a dynamic tag's value. That way ld doesn't depend on the output section name, making it possibile to map dynamic sections differently. bfd/ * elf-m10300.c (_bfd_mn10300_elf_finish_dynamic_sections): Use linker dynamic sections in calculating size and address of * dynamic tags rather than using output sections.
