In a linker script, a sequence like this:
foo = ADDR (.some_section);
bar = foo;
PROVIDE (foo = 0);
will result in 'bar = ADDR (.some_section)' and 'foo = 0', which seems
like incorrect behaviour, foo is clearly defined elsewhere, and so the
PROVIDE should not trigger.
The problem is that an expression like this:
foo = ADDR (.some_section);
can't be evaluated until a late phase of the linker, due to the need
for the section '.some_section' to have been placed, then the PROVIDE
was being marked as being used during an earlier phase. At the end of
the link, both lines:
foo = ADDR (.some_section);
PROVIDE (foo = 0);
are active, and this causes the final value of 'foo' to be 0.
The solution proposed in this commit is that, during earlier phases of
the linker, when we see the expression 'foo = ADDR (.some_section);',
instead of ignoring the expression, we create a "fake" definition of
'foo'. The existence of this "fake" definition prevents the PROVIDE
from being marked used, and during the final phase the real definition
of 'foo' will replace the "fake" definition.
The new test provide-6 covers the exact case described above. The
provide-7 test is similar to the above, but using constant
expressions, this was never broken, but is added here to increase
coverage.
The provide-8 case also didn't fail before this commit, but I did
manage to break this case during development of this patch. This case
was only covered by a mmix test before, so I've added this here to
increase coverage.

Currently when recording a PROVIDE statement in a linker map file we
display something like:
PROVIDE (SYMBOL, VALUE)
However, in a linker script we write these statements like this:
PROVIDE (SYMBOL = VALUE);
This commit changes the output in the map file to be closer to linker
script format, the map file now contains:
PROVIDE (SYMBOL = VALUE)
The ';' is still missing from the end, but map files are not intended
to be valid linker script input, so adding the ';' just seems like
clutter.

Complement commit ffe54b3798 ("Pad sections according to current
script FILL.") and add a FILL script statement test for targets that
impose the minimum alignment of more than 2**2 for the `.text' section.
These targets include IA-64 targets, MIPS targets other than bare-metal
ELF and VxWorks, TILE-Gx targets, TILEPro targets and X86-64 PE targets.
Use the `notarget' tag for configuration triplets that are incompatible
with the new test, but are supported by the existing FILL test, and

I misunderstood the hppa alias problem. File offsets of segments need
to be such that no page is mapped twice with different permissions.
(Which still seems to me like something the kernel could fix, but
anyhow, this is not so difficult to achieve in ld.)

Many of the ld tests are not run for cross builds, in some cases
because the test needs to run a newly linked executable, and in others
simply because it was easier to write the test for native only. Even
when a test needs to run, it's good to compile and link to exercise
the linker. So that's what this patch does. I've also rid us of
the old ld_link procedure with all the HOSTING_CRT0 etc. setup. It's
much simpler to just link with $CC.
This does mean that a cross build with cross-compiler installed but
no cross C-library will give lots of failures. If that turns out to
be too annoying, I guess we can write a tcl procedure to detect it and
not run all the extra tests.

Currently the EXCLUDE_FILE linker script construct can only be used
within the input section list, and applied only to the section pattern
immediately following the EXCLUDE_FILE. For example:
*.o (EXCLUDE_FILE (a.o) .text .rodata)
In this case all sections matching '.text' are included from all files
matching '*.o' but not from the file 'a.o'. All sections matching
'.rodata' are also included from all files matching '*.o' (incluing from
'a.o').
If the user wants to restrict the inclusion of section '.rodata' so that
this too is not taken from the file 'a.o' then the above example must be
extended like this:
*.o (EXCLUDE_FILE (a.o) .text EXCLUDE_FILE (a.o) .rodata)
However, due to the internal grammar of the linker script language the
snippet 'EXCLUDE_FILE (a.o) .text' is parsed by a pattern called
'wildcard_spec'. The same 'wildcard_spec' pattern is also used to parse
the input file name snippet '*.o' in the above examples. As a result of
this pattern reuse within the linker script grammar then the following
is also a valid linker script construct:
EXCLUDE_FILE (a.o) *.o (.text .rodata)
However, though the linker accepts this without complaint the
EXCLUDE_FILE part is silently ignored and has no effect.
This commit takes this last example and makes it a useful, valid,
construct. The last example now means to include sections '.text' and
'.rodata' from all files matching '*.o' except for the file 'a.o'.
If the list of input sections is long, and the user knows that the file
exclusion applies across the list then the second form might be a
clearer alternative to replicating the EXCLUDE_FILE construct.
I've added a set of tests for EXCLUDE_FILE to the linker, including
tests for the new functionality.

This patch fixes PR 4643 by allowing symbols in the LENGTH and ORIGIN
fields of MEMORY regions. Previously, only constants and constant
expressions are allowed.
For the AVR target, this helps define memory constraints more
accurately (per device), without having to create a ton of device
specific linker scripts.

Tests that I added in commit c05b575a8d
fails on 32-bit hosts due to differences in whitespace.
This patch updates the expected output patterns to be more accepting of
differences in whitespace, the tests should now pass.

When creating a linker mapfile (using -Map=MAPFILE), we previously would
always try to evaluate the expression from a PROVIDE statement.
However, this is not always safe, consider:
PROVIDE (foo = 0x10);
PROVIDE (bar = foo);
In this example, if neither 'foo' or 'bar' is needed, then while
generating the linker mapfile evaluating the expression for 'foo' is
harmless (just the value 0x10). However, evaluating the expression for
'bar' requires the symbol 'foo', which is undefined. This used to cause
a fatal error.
This patch changes the behaviour, so that when the destination of the
PROVIDE is not defined (that is the PROVIDE is not going to provide
anything) the expression is not evaluated, and instead a special string
is displayed to indicate that the linker is discarding the PROVIDE
statement.
This change not only fixes the spurious undefined symbol error, but also
means that a user can now tell if a PROVIDE statement has provided
anything by inspecting the linker mapfile, something that could not be
done before.

Add a new option 'map' to the ld run_dump_test mechanism. When the
'map' option is given run_dump_test will ensure that there is a
-Map=MAPFILE present in the linker command line, adding one if needed.
The MAPFILE is then compared with the file passed to the new 'map'
option using the regexp_diff function. This should make it slightly
easier to write tests that check the linker mapfile output.
The only test I found that already compares mapfile content is updated
to use the new mechanism.
